Liverpool’s midfield has taken a hit this summer.

We’ve seen Curtis Jones leave for Inter Milan in a bargain £30m deal for the England playmaker. That has left Andoni Iraola quite light on options.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch look set to hoover up the majority of the minutes with Alexis Mac Allister also providing an option.

Beyond those three however and the 2024/25 Premier League champions’ options look quite skinny.

Liverpool linked with Lamine Camara deal

Wataru Endo barely ever starts and the duo of James McConnell and Trey Nyoni are very inexperienced. The club’s awkward start to the season – away at Newcastle – threw up plenty of questions to answer for Andoni Iraola over the makeup of his midfield.

Gravenberch continually turned the ball over in dangerous areas while Szoboszlai is not a natural for a deeper midfield role.

It left fans begging for a new signing in the closing stages of the window with Lamine Camara one name reported to be under consideration.

Chelsea now favourites for Camara

Chelsea under Xabi Alonso are courting the Senegal international strongly and look firm favourites for the 22-year-old’s signature.

A deal is about to be struck with Monaco and Liverpool supporters have been left hoping for a late hijack. According to a report from Lewis Steele in the Daily Mail however fans should not hold their breath.

Because sporting director Richard Hughes currently has got NO PLANS to sign Camara – or any other No6 – before the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday.

Liverpool ready to pass on opportunity to sign Camara

“Lamine Camara at Monaco is a name that has circled in the last 24 hours – with Chelsea also said to be linked – but the word from Liverpool sources remains the same: The Reds are not in the market for midfielders,” the report reads.

“And that will only change if another midfielder leaves.”

It’s very unlikely that Hughes and Iraola will sanction a departure before the deadline – even though Mac Allister has been linked with Manchester City.

James McConnell has been asked to stick around rather than go on loan – meaning Liverpool’s midfield selection looks set in stone for the 2026/27 season.
