Alireza Jahanbakhsh is set for an Eredivisie return. In somewhat surprising fashion, the former Brighton and Feyenoord man is going back to Rotterdam with Excelsior.

The 32-year-old right winger was a free agent after leaving Dender in Belgium and has signed a one-year contract with an option for another season.

Previously, Jahanbakhsh played in the Netherlands for Heerenveen and Feyenoord in recent years, but enjoyed his best period in the league with AZ.

In Alkmaar, he played over 100 matches before departing in 2018 for Brighton for 22.5 million euros. Three years later, Feyenoord signed him after a poor period saw him fall out of favour in England.

Jahanbakhsh worked well under Arne Slot at De Kuip and grew into a valued member of the squad. However, Feyenoord did not extend the expiring contract of the 99-cap Iran international in the summer of 2024. Jahanbakhsh subsequently rejoined Heerenveen before embarking on his brief Belgian adventure.
