From a Villa fan perspective, this feels like a really smart move. There is always excitement when a club signs a big name, but this type of deal often says more about the quality of the planning. Ruggeri sounds like a player picked for function, fit and what the squad actually needs. That is encouraging.
Digne has been a good servant, but replacing him with someone younger, more physical and already experienced at a high level feels like strong business. The detail that Villa wanted “a more physical profile of left-back” is the key point for me. Supporters have seen matches where a bit more presence and defensive steel on that side would have helped, especially in tougher away games.
There is also something reassuring about the club still backing Maatsen while looking for a different kind of option. Depth matters if Villa want to compete seriously across multiple fronts, and this feels like proper squad building rather than short-term patchwork. If Ruggeri can defend first, support attacks when needed and give Emery the balance he wants, fans will get behind him quickly.
