The good vibes resonated all around Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Old-Timers’ Day has that kind of effect on fans regardless, but unlike in many of the previous recent Old-Timers’ Days (Josh noted that they were 2-8 in their last 10 of ’em), the modern Yanks showed up. Gerrit Cole was up to the task of dueling fellow veteran Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale, and outside of one inning, he was nails. And while the flurry of singles in that frame put the Yanks behind 2-1, they had a rally in their bones, thanks to George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones. A big RBI triple from Jones plated Lombard to tie it up (Jones’ second ribbie off Sale), Jones scored the go-ahead run on a balk, and Lombard later homered as well. Ben Rice also had a tack-on solo shot that proved vital in the 5-4 win.
Because it was Old-Timers’ Day, I do want to touch on what was my favorite moment of the day. It’s encapsulated by the image above, with Austin Wells walking Diana Munson out to the field. She talked to YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits in the pregame about how touched she was by Wells’ recent tribute to the late captain, and she was so excited to meet him. Well, you’re basically seeing that moment above. I loved it, plain and simple.
