It has been about six weeks since Germany and Ivory Coast faced each other in their second World Cup group-stage match. Thanks to a brace from substitute Deniz Undav, the DFB team won 2-1.

But back then, the German victory — ultimately meaningless — was accompanied by plenty of controversy. Among other things, Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé accused the four-time world champions of lacking fairness.

“We look to nations like this as an example in order to keep developing, and I was a little disappointed by the lack of fair play from this German team,” he said after the final whistle. 

Despite all their differences, Germany and Ivory Coast ultimately shared the same World Cup fate. Both teams had to head home after the round of 32. While Germany lost to Paraguay, the West Africans came up short in their clash with Norway.

For a team with such high ambitions, such an early exit apparently was not enough. As a result, Faé’s expiring contract was not extended, as became known on Saturday morning.
