Newly-installed Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Adi Hütter may have fans of his club excited about his new appointment, but there was one crucial Hessian test the Austrian failed during an SGE promotional event. At the traditional “Handkäse Frühstück” event, Hütter committed a faux pas. He ate Hessen’s state dish with the wrong utensil.

What is ‘Hessian Handkäse’?

Hessian Handkäse is a small, firm sour-milk cheese traditionally associated with Hesse, especially the Frankfurt and Rhine-Main regions. Made from low-fat quark, it ripens into a pungent, translucent yellow cheese with a strong aroma and tangy, slightly sharp flavor. A common local joke refers to “Handkäse mit Musik”, a reference to both the cacophonous sounds associated with its preparation and the odiferous after-effects of its digestive process.

Kicker reporter Julian Franzke – covering the event – joked that the new Eintracht Frankfurt signings assigned to the event should hope that “the coming of the music” wouldn’t coincide with the club medical. Jean-Matteo Bahoya, Nnamdi Collins and new signing Noël Aséko got their turn, as did sporting director Timmo Hardung. Hütter arrived last.

Hütter quickly rectifies his mistake

Hütter got off to something of an awkward start, ordering a portion without onions. The 56-year-old also appeared to struggle a bit with the music reference and comprehend fans speaking in the local dialect. Hütter nevertheless understood perfectly well when a fan told him, following his first bite, that he wasn’t supposed to eat the cheese with his fork.

Hütter – knowing full well that he needed to continue ingratiating himself with the local population quickly in his second SGE stint – quickly acceded to the request and stabbed his next portion with his knife. The fans remained in a forgiving mood, assuring Hütter that there were plenty of other guests who also didn’t know the rule.

It genuinely seems as though both Hütter and the club supporters are happy to put Hütter’s 2021 decision to move to Borussia Mönchengladbach behind them. Hütter has clearly learned the value of listening to his fan base, not to mention walking away from a club with Champions League potential.
