The Italian national team are yet to hire a new manager and while a host of names have been linked, they have now stepped forward for ex-Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that the Azzurri – led by Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, have made the first moves for Guardiola. They spent the weekend in Barcelona and held a meeting with the manager, expressing their interest in hiring him.

The meeting continued through the weekend and this is a sign that a concrete attempt to sign him has been made, with other managers also in the fray.
Corriere della Sera add some more information, clarifying that Italy now have a project in place and this has been put forward to Guardiola. Whether he accepts it or not won’t change the project, as they want to build with very specific ideas.
Guardiola will issue his response soon and it is expected to come this week. It will also decide whether Italy will push for other candidates or not as they want to make an appointment as early as this week themselves.
