One shot behind them is a group that includes Brooks Koepka and Min Woo Lee, while big names like world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland and defending champion Chris Gotterup all finished the day in red numbers and remain well within striking distance after 18 holes.

Rory McIlroy part of a five-way tie for the lead
Rory McIlroy claimed a share of the early lead after an opening-round 65 at the Renaissance Club. Starting at the 10th, the 2023 champion’s first nine was a mixed bag which began and ended with bogeys but had three birdies in between as he turned at one under. But the 601-yard first played to his strengths as a 352-yard drive was followed by a four-iron to inside 19 feet for an eagle.

Robert MacIntyre, Calum Hill lead Scots at Genesis Scottish Open
On Day 1 of the Genesis Scottish Open at the sun-soaked Renaissance, MacIntyre was in a relatively tranquil mood. A 3-under 67 to get his campaign underway was a sturdy start and left him with plenty to be positive about. A good up-and-down on his last hole – the ninth – to save his par was a nice way to finish. Late on a lovely day, MacIntyre was joined on the 3-under mark by his fellow Scot, Calum Hill.

Rory McIlroy says Scottish Open is the ‘perfect lead-in to the Open’
The prized slot that the Scottish Open occupies in the golf schedule, the week before The Open, is so cherished it’s just about protected by the National Trust. “We’ve got to be careful with that,” said McIlroy of the prospect of the Scottish Open becoming an event purely for Championship Series players in the PGA Tour’s new vision. “Because then these national Opens lose the fabric of what they are, right? You can’t call yourself a national Open anymore if it’s a closed off tournament and there’s only a certain number of guys. I think this (the Scottish Open) is a perfect, it’s a perfect lead-in to The Open Championship. I see how well it’s done over these past few years, and I definitely I feel like it’s the blueprint for a lot of the other national Opens.”
