Serena Williams’ return to the Wimbledon stage at age 44 has added some juice to this year’s tournament.

That singles match isn’t supposed to be the last of Williams at Wimbledon — but an injury could prevent her from taking the court again.
With plans to participate in doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams, as six-time doubles champions at Wimbledon, Serena Williams reportedly began dealing with a knee ailment that could impact her status moving forward.

Serena Williams injury update
Tuesday marked Williams’ first singles match since the 2022 US Open, representing her first Grand Slam singles appearance in years. Despite plenty of anticipation for her match, ultimately, it was Joint who advanced past the first round as Williams fell 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
Initially, it was unclear why Williams did not proceed to meet with reporters after the match on Tuesday. But on Wednesday, per ESPN, Williams’ agent released a statement that said the tennis star “tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set.”
“She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week,” Jill Smoller’s statement read, per ESPN.
According to The Times reporter Tom Kershaw, crutches were brought to Williams’ locker room on Tuesday night, but “she left the All England Club unassisted.”

Williams was reportedly excused from media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams. There were no indications during the match that Williams had injured herself, but her status now remains unclear for the doubles portion at Wimbledon.
