Federico Valverde endured a difficult night as Uruguay crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final Group H fixture.

However, beyond Uruguay’s elimination, much of the attention centred around the Real Madrid midfielder’s reaction after being substituted by Marcelo Bielsa during the second half.

Spain’s victory secured their place in the knockout stages, while Uruguay’s disappointing World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end.

For Valverde, who captained the Uruguay national team against Spain, the evening became even more frustrating after a controversial decision from Marcelo Bielsa.

Valverde’s surprising substitution

With Uruguay trailing and needing a goal to keep their World Cup hopes alive, Bielsa decided to make a major change in the 57th minute by withdrawing Federico Valverde and introducing Federico Vinas.
