Rory McIlroy has enjoyed a supremely successful 2026 so far.

Sure, McIlroy only has one victory to his name, but that came at The Masters, when he became only the fourth man in history to defend his title at Augusta National.

The 37-year-old Northern Irishman has reached legendary status in the game, having won 30 PGA Tour titles and 21 DP World Tour trophies, including six major championships.

Rory McIlroy is now targeting wins at major championships and regular PGA Tour events at the most prestigious venues.

McIlroy still dearly wants to win two PGA Tour events in particular – The Memorial Tournament and The Genesis Invitational.

He has made it very clear that he has earned the right to play whenever he chooses.

The golfing superstar has also highlighted how he is under absolutely zero obligation to play in events that he might prefer to skip.

Rory McIlroy could repeat the actions which made the PGA Tour ban Seve Ballesteros

McIlroy’s schedule has reduced drastically over the past couple of years.

He played 19 PGA Tour events in 2024 and only 16 in 2025.

This year, the six-time major winner has competed in just nine PGA Tour tournaments.

With McIlroy’s new outlook on the game, and more specifically his career in general, the PGA Tour could have a big issue on their hands before the start of the new 2027 season.

He will be playing in The Scottish Open and The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next month, so that will take him to 11 events for the season.

However, McIlroy does not plan to play the 3M Open or the Wyndham Championship. That leaves just three playoff events, which would take him to 14 for the season if he does indeed play in all three of them.

McIlroy’s agent, Sean O’Flaherty, has already said his client does not plan to play any of the PGA Tour FedExCup Fall events.

So even if he does play all three playoff events, something that he didn’t do last year, he will fall one short of the required 15 events in order to retain PGA Tour membership.

Now, the PGA Tour will undoubtedly shift the goalposts. After all, they cannot afford to lose a star like McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy could suffer a similar PGA Tour fate to Seve Ballesteros

Back in 1986, Seve Ballesteros was banned for an entire season after he played just nine events in 1985.

Ballesteros was the world’s number one golfer 40 years ago, so it was a majorly bold call at the time from the PGA Tour.

Ironically, Ballesteros campaigned for the number of events required to keep a PGA Tour card to be increased to 15 in 1984.

That backfired on him and now Rory McIlroy could face a similar issue in 2027, if he fails to play in 15 PGA Tour events this year.

As mentioned earlier, though, McIlroy will surely escape any serious consequence.

Golf is a global sport today and McIlroy is arguably its biggest superstar.
