Bryson DeChambeau shot the joint-lowest round of the day on his way to finishing just one shot outside the playoff at LIV Golf Korea.

DeChambeau looked to be well on his way to defending his title from last year when he opened up with a five under par round of 65 on Thursday in Korea.

Unfortunately, his momentum stalled on Saturday. DeChambeau made four bogeys during the third round to fall down the leaderboard.

He ultimately left himself with just too much to do in the final round in Busan.

DeChambeau gave himself a chance with five birdies in his first 11 holes. However, a bogey on the 12th dented his hopes. One more birdie meant that he finished one shot adrift of Talor Gooch and eventual champion Joaquin Niemann.

Speaking after his round, DeChambeau suggested that a familiar problem crept up.

“There were times where it felt amazing and times where it just leaked on me a little bit. I had my ‘A’ game on 11 and pushed it right on 12, and that’s one of those things I’ve been trying to fix all year. More work to be done, but a little push on 18. I gave myself some chances, just wasn’t my day today,” he said.

The team victory eases the blow for Bryson DeChambeau

There was better news for DeChambeau in the team event. The Crushers finished three shots clear of OKGC to win.

Charles Howell III finished tied for eighth in Korea, as did Travis Smyth. Smyth was drafted in as a replacement for Paul Casey who was dealing with a wrist injury.

Despite Anirban Lahiri ending the tournament at two over par, it was a good week for the Crushers.

And DeChambeau suggested that the team result was a silver lining.

“Yeah, it’s great. It shows how hard our guys worked not only this week but leading up into this week. We’ve been grinding and we all wanted to play our best, and although we didn’t get it done individually, we got the team win, so proud of them,” he said.

Despite DeChambeau being left frustrated with the shots he pushed at the crucial moments, it feels like another step in the right direction for the two-time US Open champion.

Admittedly, his two victories earlier this season did not stand him in good stead when the majors came around. DeChambeau missed the cut at both The Masters and the PGA Championship.

However, he looks set to take plenty of belief with him to Shinnecock Hills. And he will be desperate to prove a real point after such a disappointing major season so far.
