The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association boys golf postseason got underway May 26 and 27 with regional tournaments held across the state.

The Milwaukee area’s top programs were among the standout performers in regional play, with Marquette, Arrowhead and Lake Country Lutheran among others each winning their regions.

Sectionals will be held June 2 or June 3 to narrow down state qualifying teams and individuals for the 100th WIAA state boys golf tournament June 8 and 9 at University Ridge in Madison. Here are the highlights for Milwaukee-area teams and individuals in regional play.

Division 1

Sectional 4

Slinger (304) took a dominant 21-stroke victory in Regional 4-A at Old Hickory Golf Club over fellow qualifiers Hartford Union (325), Oshkosh West (341) and Beaver Dam (347). Slinger had four of the top five individuals, led by event medalist and senior Ryan Bellanti’s 2-over-par score of 74. Hartford senior Ben Sabel (76) broke up a top five that otherwise consisted of Owls senior Jed Fahrenholz (76), sophomore Charles Davis (76) and senior Zach Argue (78).

Milwaukee-area programs Cedarburg (320) and Grafton (323) took top spots at Regional 4-B alongside Sheboygan North (323) and Plymouth (329). Cedarburg senior Owen Wood was the event medalist with a 2-over-par 73, followed by Grafton senior Jake Leidel (75). Port Washington (338) missed the team cut by nine strokes, but will send senior Jack Showalter (T-third, 77) and senior Eric Krentz (T-10th, 82) individually to sectionals.

Sectional 5

Mukwonago (308) emerged out of Regional 5-B at Edgewood Golf Course after tying with Milton for second place among a tightly-grouped top four teams also including regional champion Badger (306) and fourth-place Edgerton (313). Mukwonago junior Reece Erickson (75) came in four strokes behind Milton junior medalist Kade Wieland (71), while fellow Mukwonago junior Cooper Hietala (76) finished tied for fifth.

Sectional 6

Arrowhead (294) took a competitive 6-A Regional title at Mee-Kwon Park Golf Course over fellow advancers Germantown (299), Menomonee Falls (302) and Homestead (304), with Oconomowoc (307) and Brookfield Central (308) narrowly missing the cut. Arrowhead junior Ian Pyatt was the medalist with a 3-under 67, beating out Menomonee Falls junior Waylan Hang (69). Arrowhead senior Jonathan Amtmann and Menomonee Falls junior Evan Misiak tied for third with scores of 71. Brookfield Central will send two individuals to sectionals, as junior Owen Soung and senior Lucas Derosa tied for eighth individually with scores of 75.

Whitefish Bay (305) came out on top in Regional 6-B at Brown Deer Park Golf Course, led by event co-medalist Jacob Gerend’s score of 1-over 72. Fellow Blue Dukes senior Thomas Began was a stroke behind in third (73), while Wisconsin Lutheran senior Griffin Frey split the individual regional title with Gerend. Wisconsin Lutheran (312), Brookfield East (318) and Wauwatosa East/West (319) were the remaining sectional qualifiers, while Nicolet (330) was first out. The Knights will still effectively have a team presence at the sectional, as senior Max Morice (T-10th, 79), junior Cameron Schweiner (T-11th, 81), senior Miles Carlson (T-19th, 84) and senior Reese Bean (T-23rd, 86) earned all four individual qualifying spots.

Sectional 7

At Morningstar Golfers Club in the 7-A Regional, Kettle Moraine (304) was the victor as Waukesha West (313), Waukesha North (318) and New Berlin Eisenhower (326) also earned qualifying spots. New Berlin West (333) missed the cut, but will send junior Jackson Komp (T-ninth, 79) individually. Waukesha West senior Mason Kufahl shot even-par 72 to earn medalist over Kettle Moraine senior Liam Morn and Waukesha North senior Lucas Piacsek, who each tied for second with scores of 74.

Defending Division 1 state champion Marquette won Regional 7-B with 287 team strokes over fellow sectional qualifiers Greenfield (352) and Milwaukee Reagan (354). Freshman Connelly Doerr was the individual medalist with a 2-under 69 at Whitnall Park Golf Course. Hilltoppers took the top four spots on the leaderboard as junior Hayes Packee and sophomore Luke Prunty each shot 71, while sophomore Christian Arean tied for fourth with his score of 76.

Sectional 8

Kenosha Tremper (328) and Racine Case (335) earned sectional qualifying spots behind Regional 8-A champion Westosha Central (313) and runner-up Wilmot Union (327) at Brighton Dale Links. Tremper freshman Owen Callahan was the event medalist with a 2-over 74. Kenosha Bradford junior Matteo Santelli finished fifth individually (77) to qualify despite his team missing the cut.

Franklin (318) edged past Oak Creek (318) via tiebreaker in the 8-B Regional, while Whitnall (324) and Greendale (332) outlasted Muskego (335) for the final qualifying spots. Muskego will send three individuals to sectionals despite missing team qualification, as junior Adam Jochims (T-seventh, 80), senior Parker Murawski (T-12th, 83) and senior Nick Rochon (21st, 84) will move on. Whitnall junior Grady Lorum and Franklin junior Caleb Peterson were event co-medalists with scores of 4-over 76 at Oakwood Park Golf Course.

Division 2

Sectional 4

Potential D2 state contender Lake Country Lutheran (310) won Regional 4-B, led by event medalist and junior Max Zastrow’s 1-under 71 at Kettle Hills Golf Course. Freshman Max Neumann was right behind in second with a 75, and senior Owen Leibham took fourth (80). Coming in behind LCL among team qualifiers were University School of Milwaukee (326), Kettle Moraine Lutheran (334) and Shorewood (347). Brookfield Academy (360) missed the cut, but will send senior Raghav Vijayapal (14th, 85) individually to sectionals.

Catholic Memorial (316) won its host Regional 4-C at Broadlands Golf Club over fellow qualifiers Lakeside Lutheran (330), Lake Mills (341) and Martin Luther (351). The race for that final qualifying team spot was fierce, with East Troy (352), St. John’s Northwestern/Chesterton Academy (354) and Saint Thomas More (354) all within striking distance. CMH senior Zac Peplinski (73) finished 1-over 73 to earn event medalist by two strokes over Martin Luther senior Tyler Michalski (75). SJNW/CA sophomore Daniel Nelson earned an individual qualification with a score of 79 that tied him for fourth overall.

Division 3

Sectional 4

Williams Bay (332) came out of Regional 4-C as the champion over fellow sectional qualifiers The Prairie School (336), Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic (358) and University Lake School (364). Williams Bay junior Daniel Gaylord was the event medalist with his score of 5-over 76 at Meadowbrook Country Club, while senior teammate Derek Johnson took fourth (80).
