The start of the 2027 PGA Tour schedule has been announced, and there’s been a number of complaints already.

We know where the PGA Tour will be going from the start of the season all the way to the PGA Championship, and there’s some glaring problems with the new schedule.

The season begins with the American Express, an underwhelming beginning to the year. And the tour will play the Cadillac Championship, The Players, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational in three consecutive weeks, meaning the best players won’t all be playing three of the year’s biggest events.

Those are the two issues that leap off the page, but one historic venue has been omitted from the early part of the schedule, which has raised concerns that it will be removed from the rotation entirely.

Trey Wingo voices concerns about the future of Colonial on the PGA Tour

The Colonial golf tournament has been held since 1946 in Fort Worth, and it will host this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. Its traditional place in the calendar is among other events played in Texas, but Trey Wingo noticed that on next year’s schedule, it won’t follow the CJ Cup as it did this year.

In fact, Colonial isn’t on the schedule released so far, which has made Wingo concerned about its future as a PGA Tour venue.

Speaking on Golf Live with Trey Wingo, he said, “We’re going to Texas, right? And then we’re going to a couple of other places, and then we have the PGA. And we should point out the PGA Championship is in Texas next year. It’s in Frisco, real close to where we just had the CJ Cup.

“What I don’t see on the schedule is the Colonial, and that’s in Fort Worth. Now, it may be a possibility that because the PGA Championship is going to be so close, somewhat in the DFW area. I mean, Frisco is way, way outside the normal DFW area. There’s a lot of land. This just in with Texas. they have room.

“I’m a little concerned that I don’t see the Colonial because this year the Byron Nelson, the CJ Cup, was after the PGA. Now it’s before. And maybe it is a possibility that it’s going to be kind of like the RBC Heritage. Well, we’re in the area anyway. We’ll have it the next week.

“To me, the Colonial is just one of the tried-and-true things in the history of the PGA Tour. Ben Hogan, Hogan’s Alley, there’s so much history there. I’m hopeful that in the next phase of the schedule, we’ll see it there.

“But if I’m the good people in Fort Worth, I’m probably a little concerned that I see all this stuff coming out there and I don’t see our name on that list.”

Why Trey Wingo should not be concerned about Colonial

In reality, there really isn’t much cause for concern for Wingo. Next year’s PGA Championship will be played in Texas at PGA Frisco, so it’s incredibly likely that the PGA Tour plans to play at Colonial the following week.

We don’t have the PGA Tour schedule post-PGA Championship yet, which is why Colonial isn’t on the calendar so far. But it just makes sense for the event to take place the week after a major played in the same state.

Wingo’s concern would be reasonable if the PGA Championship were being played elsewhere and the players had completed the Texas part of the schedule. But that isn’t the case.

It would be truly shocking for the tour to remove this historic venue when there really isn’t any desire from fans or players for them to do so next year.
