Johnson Wagner has responded to being asked whether Cameron Young is a better golfer right now than Scottie Scheffler, with Young well on his way to winning the Cadillac Championship.

Scheffler did win on his first start of 2026, at The American Express. However, the world number one has not been at his very best for much of the year.

Since Scheffler’s victory at La Quinta, Rory McIlroy has won The Masters, Matt Fitzpatrick has secured three titles, and Young is now on course for his second significant win of the season.

Johnson Wagner says whether Cameron Young or Scottie Scheffler is the better golfer right now

The 28-year-old edged out Fitzpatrick to clinch The Players Championship crown. And he goes into the final round of the Cadillac Championship with a six-shot lead over the field.

Scheffler is one of those within the chasing pack. He will join his Ryder Cup teammate in the final group on Sunday at Doral. However, the last round has the potential to be a procession.

Nevertheless, Johnson Wagner has told Scorecard on CBS Sports that he would push back on the idea that Young is a better golfer than Scheffler right now.

“Scheffler finished second at The Masters, second at Harbour Town. This tournament is pretty much exactly how Harbour Town started. He played with Matt Fitzpatrick the first two days, didn’t in the third round, played his way into the final group on Sunday and then forced his way into a playoff. It’s eerily similar. Cam Young and Scottie played Thursday, Friday together, didn’t play together today obviously. And he played his way into that final pairing,” he said.

“I know Cam Young’s playing great golf, but when you look at Scottie Scheffler, the way he’s going to start well tomorrow, you know he is, and by the way, I think he may be just as long as Cam Young. That tee shot he hit on 18, it was 310 yards to cover the corner of the water. He didn’t need to because he was down the middle, but he would have covered the corner in a heartbeat. He also hit the 12th green in two today as well, driver, three wood. It’s only 667 yards. The second shot into 12 may have been the best swing he made, this thing was beautiful, I didn’t think he could get it to the front edge, he flew it all the way towards that right side and had about 15 feet for eagle.

“He’s got all the shots in the bag right now. Nobody’s better at golf than Scottie Scheffler in the world.”

What Johnson Wagner noticed about Scottie Scheffler during the third round of the Cadillac Championship

There is arguably not a single player on the planet who would turn down the chance to have Scheffler’s record in 2026. He could be on course to finish second for the third start in a row.

Meanwhile, he has not finished outside the top 25 in a single event this season. However, as it is Scheffler, it is easy to fall into the trap of starting an inquest to try and work out why he is not as dominant.

Wagner followed Scheffler during the third round at Doral, and he insisted that he has absolutely no concerns about the state of his game.

“The swing was unbelievable today in heavy winds, a lot of crosswind holes. He had the ability to work the ball both directions. I really liked a lot of the iron shots and wedge shots that he hit. He was seemingly pin high coming into every green,” he said.

“But with the putter, he spoke after the round with Amanda Balionis, saying that these green complexes, the grain seems to do a lot of different things, almost against some slope, so he said he’s been struggling with the putter. And I saw it, he had chance after chance the entire back nine and really didn’t make anything at all.”

It is easy to forget now that Scheffler did not win on the PGA Tour until the start of May 12 months ago. So there is little need to panic when you consider that he still won two major titles in 2025.

He is clearly edging closer to getting back to his best. The rest of the PGA Tour is probably in trouble when he gets there.
