Rory McIlroy is the biggest star on the PGA Tour right now.
McIlroy won The Masters for the second time in a row two weeks ago, and in doing so, he reached a new echelon amongst the elite.
The 36-year-old from Northern Ireland has now won 30 PGA Tour tournaments including six major championships – something that only nine other golfers in the history of the game have achieved.

McIlroy is a hugely popular figure in America and, as such, he is the PGA Tour’s most marketable asset.
However, after McIlroy’s Masters win, the PGA Tour now have a real issue which may be unsolvable.
Rory McIlroy has given the PGA Tour a big problem
McIlroy’s career now will revolve entirely around adding to the six major championships he has already won.
He has obviously already built his schedule throughout the year around peaking at the right times between April and July.

As a result, he may miss more than his fair share of Signature Events.
McIlroy has already skipped one Signature Event this season – the RBC Heritage.
He won’t be playing at the Cadillac Championship next week either.
It was much the same in 2025, when he missed out on three of the eight Signature Events.
The whole point of creating the Signature Events in the first place was to guarantee fans and sponsors eight tournaments throughout the season where all of the best golfers on the PGA Tour would be in attendance.
However, McIlroy has clearly thrown a spanner in the works in regards to that specific model.

He is in a totally unique position now whereby he is the one calling the shots and there is little that the PGA Tour will be able to do about that without harming their own brand.

PGA Tour may not be able to fix Rory McIlroy issue
The PGA Tour are in a real bind here.
McIlroy is clearly prioritising the major championships. Those are the only ones he is really interested in winning, much like Novak Djokovic in tennis.
So what can the PGA Tour actually do to ensure that McIlroy plays in more Signature Events?
The answer is, very little actually.
Making it an obligation for golfers to play in at least six Signature Events and fining them if they miss more than two would be a pointless task with McIlroy.
They couldn’t ban him from playing either, it would be a totally self-defeating move for them to make.

Perhaps the only thing they could do is instil a new rule whereby golfers will not be eligible to win the FedEx Cup if they do not play in at least six Signature Events throughout the season.
But would Rory McIlroy even be that bothered? I’m not sure he would. All he cares about now is adding to his major championship trophy haul and that means that the PGA Tour are very much stuck between a rock and a hard place.
