Rory McIlroy has been in this position before.

In fact, he was in almost the exact same position last year at the Masters.

The Northern Irish golfer looked to be well on his way to a second green jacket after he set the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history following the completion of his second round on Friday. However, a 1-over Round 3 on Saturday, April 11, has McIlroy in a tie for first place as he looks for his second green jacket going into the Masters in Round 4.

A win on April 12 could come with an additional piece of history: becoming the first back-to-back Masters champion since Tiger Woods over two decades ago.

To get that, though, McIlroy will likely have to play a clean, bogey-free round against Cameron Young, who shot 7-under par 65 on Saturday to position himself atop the leaderboard with McIlroy.

How many majors has Rory McIlroy won?

McIlroy heads into Sunday’s round at Augusta National as a five-time major champion. He is just one of six golfers to achieve one of golf’s hardest feats: the career grand slam, which consists of wins at all four of the major championships — the Masters, the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.

His first major win came in at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2011 at the U.S. Open, when he finished with a 16-under par 268 score. He followed that up with the PGA Championship one year later, thanks to a strong third round where he shot a 5-under par 67.

The PGA Championship is the only major McIlroy has won twice after he secured his second title in 2014 — one of two major championships he won that season — when he shot rounds of 66-67-67-68 to finish at 16-under par 268 to beat out Phil Mickelson by one stroke. As noted by Golfweek, McIlroy’s PGA Championship win in 2014 made him just one of four golfers in the past century to win four major championships aged 25 or younger, with others being Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones.

How many Masters has Rory McIlroy won?

McIlroy has just one green jacket in his career, coming last season at Augusta National. He entered Round four with a two-stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau and seven-stroke lead over Justin Rose, whom he had to beat in a sudden-death playoff to win the 89th edition of the Masters.

He did so with a birdie putt on Hole 18 that dropped him to his knees.
