Electric sports cars haven’t exactly taken off yet. Audi and Porsche both have battery-powered coupes in the works, but the recent slowdown in EV demand has already cast some doubt over those models. BMW, fresh off the debut of its new i3, still believes there’s room for electric sports cars in today’s market—whether enthusiasts are fully on board or not.
Speaking at the i3 launch, BMW’s product boss Bernd Körber said an electric sports car would make sense within the brand’s lineup. He stopped short of confirming a production model but emphasized that BMW is always exploring new performance opportunities:
‘BMW will always look into sports cars; EVs have a space in sports cars. So I would say not unlikely, but not something that will be imminently launched next year.’

Of course, BMW already has an electric BMW M3 on the way—likely alongside an M4 coupe counterpart. That model will ride on the new i3’s Neue Klasse platform and could feature up to four electric motors producing as much as 700 horsepower. Still, a dedicated two-door electric sports car would be a very different proposition.
BMW did build a Neue Klasse coupe prototype back in 2024, though it’s not expected to reach production in its current form. The company has previously said its 800-volt architecture could support as much as 1,341 horsepower with four motors, meaning any future two-door EV would hardly be lacking in performance.
It remains to be seen whether BMW revisits that prototype or develops something entirely new—but at least the door is open.

Motor1’s Take: Electric sports cars may not be in high demand right now, but with Audi and Porsche pushing forward with their own BEV coupes, BMW joining the mix would make plenty of sense.
