Liverpool Given Encouragement in Pursuit of Castello Lukeba from RB Leipzig

Liverpool are continuing to shape the next phase of their defensive rebuild, and fresh information has emerged regarding a long standing transfer target. Recruitment staff at Anfield have been assessing centre back options for some time, and developments around RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba could prove significant ahead of the summer window.

With Arne Slot overseeing the squad after guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2024-25, the club are focused on strengthening areas that will sustain success. Defence remains a priority, particularly with uncertainty surrounding several established players.

Liverpool defensive planning under Arne Slot

Liverpool began the process of refreshing their back line last summer. Giovanni Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez were added to the squad, while a deal announced in February confirmed Jeremy Jacquet will arrive before next season.

Those signings represent an investment in the future, yet Liverpool still face key decisions at centre back. Ibrahima Konate is currently due to leave Anfield on a free transfer at the end of the campaign, while both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are entering the final year of their contracts and have attracted transfer interest.

That context has increased the importance of Liverpool’s recruitment work. The club’s analysts and scouts have compiled a list of potential additions capable of fitting Slot’s tactical approach and long term vision.

According to information reported by transfer insider Florian Plettenberg, Lukeba is open to a move this summer and could become available for a fee below the release clause written into his RB Leipzig contract.

The clause currently stands at €80 million, however the update indicates the defender could be signed for around €70m (£60m). That represents a potential €10 million reduction which may increase competition among interested clubs.

For Liverpool, the development provides clarity around a player they have tracked extensively.
