Speaking ahead of LIV Golf Hong Kong this week, Jon Rahm stirred controversy when he delivered a nearly 3-minute rant about why he is the only one who didn’t come to terms with the DP World Tour. His tirade drew the attention of others, including Rory McIlroy, who said, “One guy thinks a little differently, and that’s a shame.”

Well, Rahm got back to what he does best on Friday: Playing golf. Starting on the sixth hole at Hong Kong Golf Club, Rahm rolled through an impressive showing, finishing with seven birdies, an eagle and a single bogey en route to a 62. In the process, Rahm moved within two shots of leader Dean Burmester at LIV Golf Hong Kong.

“Really good day of golf. There’s no other way of saying it,” Rahm said. “Did okay off the tee, which I think is one of the keys out here. It’s not the longest golf course, so you can put those tee shots in the fairway and you’re going to have a lot of opportunities to attack, and did just that. If I had to say an MVP of the day, it’s the putter.

“Made a lot of good putts, made a lot of mid-range putts from 15 to 20 feet, which can’t be taken for granted. It’s a fun day on the greens.”

It’s been 26 events since Rahm last won on LIV Golf, when he emerged victorious at the circuit’s 2024 event back in Chicago. Rahm has lost twice in playoffs since then, but he’s hoping to snap the skid this weekend.

“I need to do a little bit better ball-striking wise. Yesterday was not great,” Rahm said. “Today it was better, but not as comfortable as I would like to be. Coming down the stretch in pressure situations, I’m going to need to play a little bit better than that or at least swing a little bit better than I have so far.

“Clearly, I’m doing just good enough to be in the hunt and hopefully get a little bit better every day.”

The weather is supposed to get dicey this weekend in Hong Kong, but Rahm said he won’t make any adjustments until he sees the situation.

“It depends on the direction of the wind, the pin location, how you’re feeling, essentially. I’m not going to have a plan until I get to the tee of whatever hole I’m playing,” he said.
