JACKSON ― A late charge from Taylor Montgomery in the second round of the Sanderson Farms Championship shook up the leaderboard on Oct. 3.
Garrick Higgo leads the field at 13 under. He has recently found his game after re-tooling his swing and opting against hip surgery. Eric Cole and Montgomery are tied for second place at 12 under. Putting has been the key to his hot start at the Country Club of Jackson.
Danny Walker is tied for fourth at 11 under. Both Montgomery and Walker are searching for their first win on the PGA Tour.
Here’s what to know after the second round as players compete for the first-place prize of $1.08 million.
Taylor Montgomery cards low round, soars into contention
Taylor Montgomery’s seven-hole stretch in the middle of his round on Oct. 3 helped him fly up the leaderboard.
Montgomery, who teed off on the 10th hole, made seven straight birdies starting with the 15th hole and ending with the third.
A poor chip caused him to followed that stretch with a bogey on the par-3 fourth, but he made three more birdies to finish with nine. It took him from tied for 35th at the start of the day to tied for second.
“It was nice to make a lot of birdies and play the way that I feel like I know I can but don’t always do,” Montgomery said.
Danny Walker makes first cut in nine starts, is firmly in contention
Statistically, Walker’s two-day performance at the Country Club of Jackson came out of nowhere.
Walker entered the Sanderson Farms Championship having missed the cut in each of his past eight starts. The most recent cut he made was at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic on May 11. Walker’s cumulative score in the eight-tournament stretch since was 11 over.
Walker shot a 4-under-par 68 on Oct. 3 to move to 11 under. It’s a huge boost for his chances of earned his PGA Tour card in 2026.
Despite the foreboding signs entering the tournament, Walker didn’t feel like he played as badly as he scored over the past couple months.
“it’s hard to not start really just focusing on results, like just praying you make cuts, and that’s all you’re kind of thinking about,” Walker said. “So getting to a point where I was just focusing on the work and just trusting in that process, it took some time, but I felt like I did a good job of that the last few weeks.”
Michael La Sasso makes six bogeys, misses cut
Current Ole Miss golfer Michael La Sasso never recovered after getting a retroactive two-stroke penalty following his first round on Oct. 2.
La Sasso shot a 4-over-par 76 in the second round. He made seven bogeys, two of which came on back-to-back holes to end his round. It took him from being tied for 13th to missing the cut.
Brandt Snedeker, Min Woo Lee, Akshay Bhatia among those who missed cut
The cut line finished at 4 under, which was just enough to exclude Brandt Snedeker from making the weekend.
Snedeker was 3 under heading to his final hole. His 14-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole missed by a fraction to the left.
Zach Johnson (1 under) and Akshay Bhatia (1 over) also missed the cut.
