According to MARCA, La Liga has filed an official complaint after a series of offensive chants and incidents during last weekend’s Madrid derby.

The governing body confirmed that both Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid were caught up in unsporting behaviour from rival supporters.

The statement explains that Atletico fans directed repeated insults at Real Madrid and their travelling supporters throughout the clash at the Metropolitano.

On the other side, some Real Madrid fans also crossed the line by aiming abuse at Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

In total, La Liga’s report lists five separate incidents involving home supporters. These included the throwing of a small object from the stands, which fortunately did not hit anyone, as well as offensive chants.

There were also five instances recorded where away fans shouted insults at Atletico fans, their club, and Simeone himself.

Spanish football under the spotlight

The Madrid derby was not the only game under review. La Liga’s complaint also pointed to problems during other fixtures.

In turn, Espanyol supporters were accused of launching abuse at Girona as well as at Barcelona.

Meanwhile, in Getafe’s meeting with Levante, the referee was insulted on two occasions by sections of the home crowd.

La Liga continues to push back against this type of behaviour, using its LALIGAVS platform to collect reports, suggestions, and complaints from fans inside stadiums.

This system allows match-going supporters to play a role in addressing violence and unsporting conduct.

For years, the organisation has been asking for more authority to take stronger action against offenders.

The latest round of complaints shows once again how serious the issue has become in Spanish football.

With incidents affecting some of the country’s biggest matches, including the high-profile Madrid derby, pressure is growing on La Liga to ensure stadiums remain safe and respectful for all supporters.
