FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Tommy Fleetwood continued to be an absolute menace in the Ryder Cup on Saturday.
With two more victories at Bethpage Black, he improved to 4-0, the only player in the competition without a blemish on his record – Rory McIlroy hasn’t lost in four matches but has one tie – and could become just the second player to win five matches at one Ryder Cup on away soil should he win his singles match on Sunday against Justin Thomas.
Already this week, Fleetwood has assumed the top spot for the highest career winning percentage among the 51 European players to appear in at least 10 Ryder Cup matches. His all-time record in four appearances in the Ryder Cup stands at 11-3-2.
On Saturday morning, Fleetwood teamed with McIlroy to win a foursomes match against Collin Morikawa and Harris English for the second time in as many days. Fleetwood and teammate Jon Rahm have both won their first six foursomes matches. The only other players to do so are Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald.
In typical Fleetwood fashion, he downplayed his success and credited McIlroy for leading them to another full point, winning 3 and 2.
“It’s Rory McIlroy. I can play from a lot of the places where he hits it,” Fleetwood said. “I’m just the lucky one that gets to play with him in foursomes and I’ll take that.”
In the afternoon, Fleetwood was equally fortunate to team with Justin Rose, who birdied six of the first eight holes en route to beating world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau.
“Tommy played incredible around the turn in the middle of the back nine, and it was an epic match to be a part of,” Rose said.
Taking down Scheffler, who won two majors and six times this season, and DeChambeau, a two-time major winner, is a big scalp for the English duo.
“Fleetwood and Rose played one of the best four-ball matches we’ve seen in Ryder Cup history,” said NBC’s Dan Hicks.
Fleetwood, 34, won the FedEx Cup in August after winning for the first time on the PGA Tour at the Tour Championship. He’s shown no signs of slowing down, hitting fairways and greens and holing clutch putts. He already became the first player to go a combined 4-0 in foursomes and four-ball twice. He previously did so in 2018 in Paris. On Sunday, he can go one better. Only Tony Lema at the 1965 Ryder Cup at Royal Birkdale has ever won five points on foreign soil, but Fleetwood has a chance to make it a party of two.
