🚨 Renato Gaúcho resigns after Fluminense crash out of Copa Sul-Americana

Renato Gaúcho is no longer Fluminense’s coach!

In the press conference at Maracanã, after being eliminated by Lanús in the quarterfinals of the Conmebol Sudamericana, the 63-year-old coach announced that he had resigned.

“Before coming here (to the press conference), I just resigned to the president. So, from now on, someone else will come here, you’ll ask him the same questions, and I want to see the answers he’ll give. I want to see if he’ll put the team the fans want or the team in his own head. I always tried to do the best for the club, in every way, in every competition. Unfortunately, we’re no longer in the Sudamericana, but we’re doing very well in the Brasileirão and the Copa do Brasil. If Fluminense were doing badly in the Brasileirão, I wouldn’t be leaving. Since we’re not, I’ll leave to clear my head and let some ‘geniuses’ on the internet keep talking about football, since they know so much.”

Renato Gaúcho was called “dumb” by Fluminense fans in the final minutes of the draw with Lanús.

“These days, nothing in football surprises me anymore. On or off the field. Especially because of social media. Everyone is a coach, everyone goes on social media and gives their opinion. Some people follow someone who knows nothing. Not everyone, but many on social media know nothing about football. And then the one who pays the price is the coach, the one who pays the price is the player. What can we do?”

“I gave an interview about two months ago and I’m repeating it: football is over, it’s over because of social media. Both for the player and for the coach. Nowadays it’s a war of criticism. When you win there are a few compliments, when you lose no one is good, everyone is bad.”

Renato arrived at Fluminense on April 3, 2025, replacing Mano Menezes, and recorded 21 wins, eight draws, and 11 losses in 40 matches.

With Renato Gaúcho, the Tricolor das Laranjeiras reached the semifinals of the Club World Cup and secured a spot in the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil, which will be played in December against Vasco. In the Brasileirão, the team is in 8th place.
