Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry entered the 2025 season on the hot seat, and on Sunday the Hokies announced that they have parted ways with the fourth-year coach. Pry never finished better than 7-6 in three full seasons in Blacksburg, and his fourth season was off to an extremely poor start as Tech was 0-3 and lost 45-26 at home to Old Dominion in Week 3. Now the Virginia Tech coaching search is underway, and the Hokies have a huge jump on most of the nation after making the decision so early in the season.

The staff at VTScoop has reported that it would be surprising to see VT look to the NFL ranks, so who are the top Virginia Tech coaching candidates the Hokies could target? Top Virginia Tech football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target on the Virginia Tech football coaching hot board is South Florida head coach Alex Golesh. Golesh will be a popular name on Power 4 lists this year after a successful run at USF, including wins over Boise State and Florida already this season.

The former Tennessee offensive coordinator is now 16-13 in his tenure at USF, and he seemingly checks a lot of boxes the Hokies would be looking for, albeit with a different style than what Virginia Tech has been accustomed to.

“He is considered an effective recruiter with an eye for player evaluation, landing the best Group of Five recruiting class in 2024,” said Amber Marie of VTScoop. “He has shown to rapidly improve his teams through effective recruiting, too. In fact, he has improved the team at nearly every stop, from Iowa State to UCF to Tennessee to USF. He has a reputation for maximizing the potential of every player, seen most notably with quarterback Hendon Hooker after his transfer from Virginia Tech to Tennessee. While he has run successful offenses, his fast-paced system would be a drastic change to Virginia Tech’s traditional style.” See more candidates at VTScoop.
