Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been recalled to the England squad according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Loftus-Cheek, 29, last appeared for the national side in November 2018, coming off the bench against the United States at Wembley. He was included in the squad the following March but pulled out through injury.
The midfielder, who joined Milan from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, has made 70 appearances for the Serie A side, scoring 11 goals. He has started both of their opening fixtures this season, netting in Friday’s win over Lecce.
He takes the place of Adam Wharton, who was forced off during Crystal Palace’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Sunday with an adductor problem.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed afterwards that the 20-year-old was unlikely to feature on international duty, though the Football Association has yet to formally announce his withdrawal.
Loftus-Cheek previously worked under current Three Lions head coach Thomas Tuchel during his time in charge at Chelsea.
England host Andorra at Wembley on 6 September before travelling to face Serbia in Belgrade three days later as they continue their World Cup qualifying campaign.
