NBC Sports cut a Richard Childress interview short after his driver, Austin Dillon, won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond on Saturday night. After Childress answered a question, NBC Sports aired a promo for next week’s race at Daytona.

“It was a great race as a race fan watching him and Blaney race. That was just great racing and both of them just raced hard,” Richard Childress said before NBC Sports cut the interview short. “And it’s almost deer season, you got to get your Winchester XP. That’s what I’m looking for is deer season, with Bass Pro.”

It was a little strange for NBC Sports to make the move, considering his team is now in the playoffs with the Dillon victory. Richard Childress Racing (RCR) has two full-time drivers —Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch — and Busch had a rough showing at Richmond due to being in a wreck and issues with his car early in the race.

Richard Childress reveals cost of last year’s Richmond incident

Saturday’s victory was redemption for RCR, as Dillon won at Richmond last year, but he could not compete in the playoffs due to wrecking Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin to earn the victory.

Before the start of the 2025 season, Childress talked about how much the Richmond incident cost the team. “The whole thing, that deal [Martinsville], and Richmond cost us over $3 million,” Childress explained on the Dale Jr Download podcast. “It isn’t always about the money but … it’s real money. But those two things, and I’ll never get over Richmond.

“Of all the things that’s happened in our career, the Richmond race, I’ll never get over that one. Because I’ve seen it happen so many times, so many times I’ve seen those things happen. And the same two guys [Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin] involved in it is the same two culprits, but it came down to who had the most power, who could get in NASCAR’s ear the hardest, and they came down on us the hardest. It just disappoints me.”
