A final-round flourish at the 49th Junior PGA Championships lifted Royal Palm Beach’s Giuseppe Puebla to a place on the United States Junior Ryder Cup team.
Puebla shot 64 (7-under) in the final round on Aug. 1 at at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex’s Ackerman-Allen Course in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The seven-birdie, bogey-free round was the best in the field and vaulted Puebla 16 positions up the leaderboard into a tie for second place with Fleming Island’s Tyler Mawhinney. He finished the four-day tournament 13-under overall.
Two Junior Ryder Cup team qualifying spots were available to eligible player at this week’s Junior PGA Championships. The winner and runner-up from the boys and girls tournaments were each be guaranteed a place on the team.
Because Mawhinney had already qualified for the Junior Ryder Cup on point accumulation, the automatic bid went to Puebla without the golfers needing to play a Friday afternoon playoff.
Kansas’ Lunden Esterline ran away with the 49th Junior PGA Championship, shooting 19-under to win by six strokes.
The 13th Junior Ryder Cup will be contested from Sept. 23-25, 2025 at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black in New York.
Esterline and Puebla will be joined by Miles Russell, Hamilton Coleman and Mawhinney on the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. A seventh team member, the captain’s pick, will be announced on Aug. 5.
The Junior Ryder Cup will be Puebla’s second competition at Bethpage Black this year. In June, he finished runner-up at the RLX Ralph Lauren Junior Classic.
Puebla, a Class of 2027 prospect, is the highest-ranked junior golfer in Palm Beach County. He is No. 7 in the latest American Junior Golf Association rankings
In March, Puebla played the Astara Chile Classic, a Korn Ferry Tour event in Santiago, Chile. He shot 11-over and missed the cut.
Puebla is enrolled with Florida Virtual School and does not participate in high school golf competitions.
