MANSFIELD — Lainey Glover is far from alone in the biggest battle of her young life.
This year’s Newville Childhood Cancer Awareness Golf Outing will prove just that.
On Aug. 2, Pleasant Hill Golf Course is set to host this year’s charity golf outing, where the proceeds will go to Glover’s family to help with cancer treatments.
“It is a rare, rare, rare brain cancer that has been removed,” Glover’s grandfather, Keith Vipperman, a long-time area high school basketball coach and current Ashland JV coach, said. “It is aggressive and is known to recur, but the doctors feel that with Lainey’s age, how soon they caught it and with proper treatments, they feel like we could have some good results.”
Glover, the 17-month-old daughter of Danielle and Brody Glover, is scheduled to start chemotherapy treatments in the coming weeks. She has already had her port installed, and things will move ahead quickly; the benefits from the outing will go toward those treatments.
Pleasant Hill Golf Course hosts the Newville Childhood Cancer Awareness Golf Outing annually. Newville is a non-profit out of Perrysville that aims at raising funds for families battling childhood cancer.
“They picked Lainey this year, and it is great,” Vipperman said. “The last three weeks, life has been turned upside down, wondering why and how and why a 17-month-old baby, but there are so many kids going through similar things. When it hits home, it is overwhelming. People from everywhere are coming in asking how they can help. There are so many people who care. It is unreal.”
It will be a two-man scramble format with an entry fee of $65 per person. The fee covers green fees, a cart, and a skins game. There will be an auction, as well as several raffles and a 50/50 drawing, following the conclusion of the golf.
Hole sponsorship opportunities are also available for $75. Sign-in begins at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. tee time.
