Following a 34-3 blowout victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, the Texas Longhorns caught the attention of former Sooner Baker Mayfield.

After the victory, Longhorns players laid Mayfield’s Oklahoma jersey in the center of the turf and inserted a Texas flag through itβ€”a nod to when Mayfield did it after a 2017 win over Ohio State.

When asked about the incident after Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 51-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints, he reflected on his past success over the Longhorns.

“It’s just a kid from Austin, Texas who went to Oklahoma and won his last two Red River games and being rent-free in their heads for almost a decade,” Mayfield told reporters.

Mayfield threw for 302 yards in the 2017 Red River battle, completing 17 of 27 throws with two touchdowns and one interception.

During his junior year with the Sooners, they secured a 45-40 victory over the Longhorns, in which Mayfield completed 22 of 31 passes for 390 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Fast-forward to the 2024 season and the Longhorns currently stand at No. 1 with a 6-0 record following their defeat over the Sooners on Saturday.

After planting the flag on Saturday, Longhorn’s line backer Anthony Hill Jr. had no regrets when asked about it during a post-game press conference.

“I just felt like it was the right thing for me to do,” Hill Jr. told reporters. “I’ve seen all the stuff they posted last year, so I felt like it was right for me to just get a little touch of something on them. I just had to post me a little something to just make the team and make us feel good.”

Texas leads the all-time Red River Rivalry with a record of 64-51-5, dating back to 1900.
