Pacquiao (62-8-2) is a multi-division champion. The former Senator of the Philippines has faced the best boxing has to offer since turning pro in 1995. The 46-year-old retired following a loss against Yordenis Ugas in 2021 and has since competed in exhibition fights.
Coming out of retirement doesn’t always end well for veterans. Pacquiao attempts to prove he still has what it takes as he re-enters the ring.
“I’ve been able to rest my body, and it’s been good for me. Now I’m back, and I’m excited to give the fans a great fight. I know that Barrios is training hard to defend his belt. I’m the challenger, so I know I have to go the extra mile and punish myself in training to win the fight. That’s the goal,” Pacquiao said.
The 30-year-old Barrios (29-2-1) has gone 3-0-1 since losing against Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman. He beat Yordenis Ugas for interim gold and became full-time champion after Terence Crawford was named “champion in recess.”
Making new fans after fighting Abel Ramos to a draw in an entertaining affair, Barrios will have a brighter spotlight on him when he faces Pacquiao. Barrios looks to put on a show against the Hall of Famer.
“I’m here, I’m ready, and I’m the champion for a reason,” Barrios said. “This is a huge fight that could be Fight of the Year. I can’t wait. All the other big fights I’ve had have prepared me for a moment like this. I’m defending my title against a legend, and I couldn’t be more honored.”
