What to know about Royal Portrush
Although the Northern Ireland course will host only its third Open Championship, it has centuries of history. The club was built in 1888 as The County Club and changed its name to Royal Portrush in 1892.
Royal Portrush has been prominently named on several lists of the best golf courses in the world and it was named the fourth-best course in the British Isles by Golf World in 1996. It is located in the extreme northern part of the country on the North Antrim Causeway Coast, with giant sand hills and overlooked by the 13th-century Dunluce Castle.
There are two courses, with the Dunluce Links used for the championship.
It’s signature hole is the long par-3 16th, measuring up to 236 yards. Players must hit their tee shots over a ravine short and right of the green, with mounds and hollows on the back and left. It’s aptly named, “Calamity Corner.”
Past multiple British Open champions in the field
With Tiger Woods out due to an Achilles injury, the only multiple major champion in the field is Padraig Harrington, who won at Carnousti in 2007 and Royal Birkdale in 2008.
