We’re getting close to Eagles training camp 2025 so we’re taking a look at some notable camp competitions.

The Eagles will have yet another new starting right guard in 2025, which has been an annual occurrence since Brandon Brooks was in his prime.

Mekhi Becton served as the Eagles’ starter at right guard for the 2024 Super Bowl season but left in free agency on a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. That means the Eagles will have a new right guard lining up between Cam Jurgens and Lane Johnson in 2025.

Here are the candidates:

Tyler Steen
Age: 25
Experience: Year 3
Size: 6-6, 321

This is the second straight year that Steen has been the starting right guard during spring practices. Last year, when Cam Jurgens moved from right guard to center to replace Jason Kelce, the assumption was that Steen, a former third-round pick, would replace him. And that’s what happened until Steen suffered a minor ankle injury early in training camp. The Eagles plugged Becton in at right guard and never moved him. Steen still ended up playing in all 21 games last season and started three, including the NFC Championship Game at left guard. The key for Steen is finding consistency. He has had good moments in the NFL but he hasn’t been that player on every snap or even in every game. If this isn’t the year Steen wins the job, it probably isn’t going to happen.

Matt Pryor
Age: 30
Experience: Year 8
Size: 6-7, 332

The Eagles drafted Pryor in the sixth round out of TCU back in 2018 and he spent his first few years in Philly before getting traded to the Colts. Since leaving the Eagles, Pryor has carved out a nice career with the Colts, 49ers and Bears. Last season, Pryor played in all 17 games and started 15 at right guard for Chicago. And he played well. According to ProFootballFocus, Pryor was the No. 21-ranked guard in the NFL last season, just one spot behind Becton. For reference, Steen did qualify and was ranked 75 of 77. Pryor was the second-team right guard this spring.

Kenyon Green
Age: 24
Experience: Year 4
Size: 6-4, 325

Green was drafted by the Texans with the No. 15 overall pick out of Texas A&M back in 2022 but his NFL career hasn’t gone to plan. He did start 23 games for Houston at left guard but really struggled. The Eagles got Green as a part of the return in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade in March. Eagles OL coach Jeff Stoutland has saved careers before and it’s intriguing to give him a failed former first-round pick, but it still seems like a bit of a longshot that Green will suddenly live up to his potential in Philly. By the way, PFF ranked Green as guard No. 76 out of 77 last season.

Trevor Keegan
Age: 24
Experience: Year 2
Size: 6-5, 306

We’ll go ahead and include the 2024 fifth-round pick on this list but he’s definitely not a favorite. Keegan won a national championship as Michigan’s starting left guard before coming to the NFL. As a rookie, he spent most of the year as a healthy scratch and played in just one game, totaling 35 offensive snaps.

Outlook

This appears to be Steen’s job to lose, but that was also the case this time last year. The question is whether or not Pryor or Green will be as big of a threat to Steen as Becton was a year ago. The Eagles typically seem to like bigger guards and made Becton the biggest guard in NFL history last season. Johnson will probably have some say in this because he’ll likely have a preference of who’s lining up next to him. Although, Johnson has played next to 13 different right guards in his career and it hasn’t seemed to bother him. The good news for the Eagles is that they are stacked at 4 of 5 offensive line positions. No matter who wins this right guard job, they’re going to be the weak link. But as long as the starting right guard is close to average, this line should still be the best in football.
