It’s the end of two rounds at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. The weather is blistering hot, and so are the scores at the top of the leaderboard.

While he isn’t in the lead, Max Homa is in a great position after his first two rounds of the weekend. The 34-year-old from Valencia, California, shot a 3-under 68 on Friday, putting him just one stroke behind Doug Ghim at the top.

One of the most personable players on the PGA Tour, Homa has been a fan favorite through the first two days, and that’s likely to continue into the weekend.

He reflected on his opening round, where he fired an 8-under 63.

“I didn’t hit one crazy shot today,” he said. “So that was cool.”

But the highlight of his weekend so far came Friday. Homa crushed a 354-yard drive over the trees at Deere Run, landing it perfectly on the fairway to set up one of several scoring chances.

This season, Homa has made the cut in both majors he’s played. He finished tied for 12th at the Masters and tied for 60th at the PGA Championship. He did not compete in the U.S. Open.

On Friday, Homa carded three birdies on the front nine and added two birdies and two bogeys on the back.
