Former boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was in the news recently for his actions inside the ring. Now, though, the Mexican boxer finds himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

The 39-year-old Chavez was arrested Thursday for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application, with federal officials set to deport him to Mexico. Once he arrives there, he faces organized crime charges.

Chavez faced Jake Paul late last month live on DAZN pay-per-view from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. According to reports, a day before the fight, the Department of Homeland Security decided he was to be arrested.

His attorney, Michael Goldstein, stated Chavez was found and picked up in front of a home in Studio City while riding a scooter outside.

“The current allegations are outrageous and simply another headline to terrorize the community,” he said (thanks to ESPN for the quotes).

Chavez has had trouble before, as he was detained in February 2024 for also overstaying his tourist visa. Officials have stated he has an active arrest warrant for being involved in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition and explosives while being affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel.
