On Wednesdays, we’ll chop it up with our Golfer of the Week. Email nominations to [email protected].

MacKenzie McCoy considers the Orange and Blue golf courses in Savoy her happy place. She’s been playing or working there for as long as she can remember.

“Everybody I’ve met over the years has been really great, and I’ve met a lot of new friends,” she said.

As assistant golf manager while she pursues her master’s at the University of Illinois, the 23-year-old does a little of everything: running the pro shop, working tournaments, driving the beverage cart. “Wherever they need me,” she said.

At last month’s UI Open, she had the weekend off — so she could compete. With consecutive rounds of 79, the area’s most dominant women’s golfer won her second UI Open title. An All-Area performer at Champaign Central who played college golf at DACC and Division I Lindenwood (Class of ‘23), she will defend her club and Twin City championships later this summer.

She said the reception from Savoy regulars has been fantastic in the days following her latest tournament title.

“It’s always neat winning there,” she said. “I definitely had a home-course advantage.”
