Meadowbrook Golf Club is set to host its first scramble of the summer this weekend.
The two-person scramble tees off at 9 a.m. Saturday, with 80 participants registered as of Wednesday morning. Those interested can sign up until end of day Thursday, Meadowbrook director of golf Matt Garrett said.
Registration is available on Meadowbrook’s website or mobile app, which will be used for live scoring.
The scramble, a form of play in which teammates each hit a shot then choose which location to continue from, has three divisions that will award prizes to the top-five finishers. The event, which includes a hamburger buffet, is expected to last around 4½ hours.
Garrett, a former Wayland Baptist women’s golf coach, said the event has attracted players from across the South Plains. He added there are men and women of all ages set to compete.
“It’s basically all the Lubbock area,” Garrett said. “Everything as far north as Plainview and as far south as Snyder.”
Participants will be split into three divisions — open; those with an average golf score of 80 or more; and those age 60 and older. In addition to top-five awards, there will be raffles that include golf clubs and apparel.
Meadowbrook is also set to host the city championships, which begin Aug. 30. The 54-hole contest is individual stroke play. Registration is open on the club’s app.
It’s all made for a busy summer for Garrett, who is in his second stint at Meadowbrook. He worked at the club from 1985-88 before taking his current job in March.
“I worked for Jay McClure, who was the women’s golf coach at Texas Tech at the time,” Garrett said. “So it’s kind of like a full circle. I started here in 1985, and here I am 40 years later, back in Meadowbrook Golf Club.”
