Denny Hamlin didn’t lose a step when returning to the driver’s seat last weekend.
After winning the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan, Hamlin missed NASCAR’s first trip to Mexico City for the birth of his son. Back from paternity leave, Hamlin finished second to Chase Briscoe on Sunday at Pocono Raceway.
Former Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick predicted that Hamlin will be a problem for the field as he seeks his first title.
“For him to come back, I think he knew he needed to make a statement, and I think he was also coming back to a track that he was very confident in,” Harvick said on his Happy Hour podcast.. “After his paternity leave and week off in Mexico, I think he did exactly what everybody thought he was going to do, and that was qualify on the pole and be a contender as he went through the race. The 11 is definitely hitting on all cylinders, and I think as you go through the rest of the year, you’re going to have to deal with them.”
Hamlin now has eight top-five finishes this season, one behind Kyle Larson for the NASCAR lead. The 44-year-old is third in overall points behind William Byron and Larson with three victories and three runner-up placements.
Hamlin maintained a strong track record at Pocono, where he notched his seventh win in 2023 before finishing second last year.
Although he may have returned sleep-deprived following the birth of his third child, Hamlin remains positioned to pursue his long-eluded Cup Series championship. Nine races remain before the 16-driver postseason begins in Darlington on Aug. 31.
Hamlin will first seek a return to victory lane at Echopark Speedway. The Quaker State 400 starts Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on TNT.
