As NASCAR continues to expand into more big cities across the country and continent, street courses might be the company’s only option for hosting races in some of them. So it should be no surprise that NASCAR is closing in on a deal for a street race in a major untapped market.

According to motorsports insider Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic, NASCAR is working on bringing a street course race to the San Diego area next year. The move would bring the Cup Series back to Southern California after several years completely removed from one of the most densely populated regions in the country.

“NASCAR is working toward finalizing a deal to race on a street course next year in the San Diego area, multiple industry sources told The Athletic, which would return its premier Cup Series to the Southern California market after a multi-year absence,” Bianchi wrote, via Adam Stern of SBJ.

The news is not going over well with all NASCAR fans though. While some like the idea of NASCAR returning to Southern California, many are complaining that they can’t stand street courses and are not looking forward to this new one:

“Please no more road courses. There are too many as is,” one user wrote on X.

“So Road America gets 100k attendance in an area that wants NASCAR but NASCAR says “We know better” and wants to go to a place that will get maybe half that. It would be like the NFL saying let’s move the Dallas Cowboys games to Bismarck, ND because it would be unique,” another complained.

“A hard NO for me. Sick of road courses. Go back to the roots. TV deals are killing @NASCAR fandom,” a third wrote.

“No fan wants this. Stop trying to hold a race where NASCAR isn’t wanted.”

“Why does NASCAR want to go to the (worst) cities in America to race in the streets? There are plenty of great Road Courses in this country that they are ignoring.”

If there wasn’t demand for NASCAR in Southern California then NASCAR wouldn’t be so eager to get back however they can. Whether you like street races or not, NASCAR is determined to get its foot back in the door down there.
