BRANDON, S.D. — In the Mitchell High School girls golf team’s second event in as many days, the Kernels battled to a runner-up finish on Friday.
Mitchell collected a team score of 322 to come in second place at the Lynx Invitational at Brandon Golf Course. Additionally, the Kernels placed five of their golfers inside the top-15, as 65 golfers representing 12 schools took part in the event.
Maddie Childs posted the highest finish for Mitchell, coming in third place after a 1-over 72 against Brandon’s par-71 layout. Childs finished with three birdies on her card and played her final five holes at 1-under par, as she was one of only five golfers to break 80 at the tournament.
Other Kernel performances include Mia Larson firing an 83 to finish in eighth place. Ava Eliason was ninth after her round of 83 and Anna Eliason came in 10th following an 84. Londyn Hajek shot an 88 to secure 14th place and Raegan Sperl was 48th following a 108.
Aberdeen Central finished with the team and individual championships, posting a winning score of 308 and occupying three of the top-four spots on the individual leaderboard. Olivia Braun secured the medalist honors following a 3-under 68 with teammate Emma Dohrer claiming second after shooting an even-par 71. Kyley Wirebaugh (77) was fourth and Watertown’s Gabi Olson (79) finished in fifth.
Behind the Golden Eagles and Kernels in the team standings, Sioux Falls O’Gorman took home third place with a 342. Host Brandon Valley (365) was fourth and Yankton (371) finished in fifth.
Mitchell’s next event will see the Kernels return to Brandon Golf Course for the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament, beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27.
