Kansas State senior golfer Cooper Schultz shares the top of the leaderboard, and the Wildcats are tied for fourth place in the team standings after a solid first round Monday in the NCAA Bremerton Regional at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington.

Schultz shot a 4-under-par 68 at the par-72 Olympic Course and is tied with Florida’s Luke Poulter. As a team, No. 10 seed K-State shot 2-over 290 and is in a tie with South Florida, one stroke behind third-place Colorado and four behind top seed Arizona State, while No. 2 Florida leads the way at 9-under 279.

Individually, K-State got an even-par 72 from senior Ian McCrary in a tie for 14th place, while senior Kobe Valociek is tied for 42nd at 2-over and Nick Mason tied for 47th at 4-over.

“It was a pretty solid round overall for us today,” K-State coach Grant Robbins said. “Cooper played great, and Ian came up big with a solid even-par round.

The course is playing very difficult with extremely firm greens. We just need to stay patient and focused on the process and keep chipping away.”

K-State is making its third regional appearance in four years but needs to finish in the top five to advance for the first time to the NCAA Championship, which takes place May 23-28 in Carlsbad, California.

The Wildcats are on track to qualify after the first round but are just one shot ahead of sixth-place Utah, with South Carolina three back at 5-over. They are grouped with South Florida and Utah in the second round Tuesday and will tee off on hole No. 10 at 8:30 a.m. Pacific time.
