HURON, S.D. — Playing in its third tournament of the week, the Mitchell High School girls golf team was at the Huron Invitational at Broadland Creek Golf Course on Thursday.

The Kernels finished second as a team with a cumulative score of 324 at the tournament, taking two of the top-five spots on the individual leaderboard. Mitchell was one of seven schools represented at the event, with 42 total golfers competing.

Anna Eliason followed up her shared victory at the Yankton Quadrangular with a fourth-place finish as the lowest Kernels scorer, carding two birdies en route to a 6-over 78 on Broadland Creek’s par-72 layout. Mia Larson secured fifth place after a round of 7-over 79, as both Kernels were two of only five golfers to break 80 for the tournament.

Other Kernel performances include Maddie Childs firing an 82 to take home a share of eighth-place. Ava Eliason and Londyn Hajek both posted rounds of 85 to tie for 11th, and Presley Meyerink tied for 31st after shooting a 100.

Aberdeen Central swept both the team and individual titles at the tournament, finishing with a 301 team score. Olivia Braun led a Golden Eagles sweep of the top-three finishers, firing a 4-under 68 with five birdies to secure the victory over Kyley Wirebaugh (70) by two strokes. Emma Dohrer was third after a 4-over 76.

In the team standings, Rapid City Stevens finished in third place behind the Kernels after posting a 344, with Sioux Falls O’Gorman (351) and Brookings (369) completing the top-five.

Mitchell’s next event is the annual Marchand Cup clash against Yankton, beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, at Lakeview Golf Course.
