SIOUX FALLS — In a scoring showcase, Maddie Childs led a banner day for the Mitchell High School girls golf team on Monday.
Childs opened her round with four birdies in the first six holes en route to winning the Warrior Invitational individual title at Prairie Green Golf Course, posting a round of 2-under 70. Additionally, the Kernels nearly broke the team scoring record set last season, posting a 306 to sweep the top tournament honors.
Finishing with six birdies on the card around Prairie Green’s par-72 layout, which is set to host the Class AA state girls golf championship in June, Childs’ round moves her to second in Class AA for the lowest round recorded this season, bested by Aberdeen Central golfer Olivia Braun’s 67 when she won the Pierre Invitational on April 29.
As a team, the Kernels placed three golfers inside the top-10, with Anna Eliason firing a 3-over 75 to finish in fifth place and Mia Larson shooting an 80 to come in eighth. Other Kernel performances include Ava Eliason’s round of 81 to finish in 11th, Londyn Hajek finishing in 29th after a 92 and Raegan Sperl posting a 98 to come in 39th.
Between Childs and Eliason on the individual leaderboard, Rapid City Stevens’ Lauren Knapp fired an even-par 72 to come in second. Aberdeen Central’s Emma Dohrer (73) was third followed by Sioux Falls O’Gorman golfer Erin Hurd (74) in fourth.
Aberdeen Central posted a team score of 319 to finish as the runner-up behind the Kernels. Rapid City Stevens (336), O’Gorman (337) and Sioux Falls Lincoln (350) completed the top-five.
Mitchell’s next tournament in the Huron Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “Mitchell Republic.” Often, the “Mitchell Republic” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
