THE WOODLANDS, Texas – All eyes were on Nelly Korda on Friday at the Chevron Championship, but not for a reason anyone expected. The world No. 1 and defending champion was in a fight to make the cut after climbing to 7 over par early in the second round. Six birdies over her last 11 holes, however, vaulted her inside the cut line of 2 over just before play was suspended due to darkness.
Nine players returned early Saturday morning to complete Round 2. A total of 81 players will play the weekend at The Club at Carlton Woods with a number of big names, including No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul, Leona Maguire and Anna Nordqvist making it right on the number.
Notables who won’t be around this weekend include 10th-ranked Charley Hull (4 over), recent winner Madelene Sagstrom (3 over), former Chevron champs Jennifer Kupcho (3 over) and Patty Tavatanakit (6 over), Celine Boutier (3 over) and Hannah Green (6 over).
Top-ranked amateur Lottie Woad missed the cut by two, as did last year’s low amateur, Jasmine Koo, who recorded three doubles on her last nine holes. Junior player Gianna Clemente is the only one of eight amateurs who made the cut.
The third round of the LPGA’s first major of the season begins at 8:52 a.m. local time. Players will go off both sides, with the final group of Yan Liu, Lindy Duncan and Mao Saigo teeing off at 11:15.
