THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Weather continues to be a storyline in steamy Texas, where play was halted at 6:25 p.m. local time for dangerous conditions. A total of eight groups did not finish the opening round of the 2025 Chevron Championship. The second round will begin on time at 7:15 a.m. local time (8:15 a.m. ET) while the first round carries on concurrently.

South Korea’s Haeran Ryu and China’s Yan Liu pace the field after posting rounds of 7-under 65 at The Club at Carlton Woods. Hyo Joo Kim, winner of the Ford Championship last month, is alone in third at 5 under. Liu also held the lead at last week’s JM Eagle LA Championship, her first post-round lead on tour. She ultimately tied for 32nd.

Ryu was bogey-free on the day, taking only 24 putts.

“That was amazing today because I change the putter last second round (at JM Eagle) and more comfortable for my putting this week,” said Ryu.

Carlota Ciganda, one of five players in the clubhouse at 4 under, shot 30 on the front nine to set the nine-hole tournament scoring record on the Nicklaus course.

Of the players who have yet to finish Round 1, former phenom Lucy Li has the best score of 4 under through 14 holes. In Gee Chun, who would achieve the career grand slam with a victory this week, is 3 under through 16 holes.

World No. 1 Nelly Korda, who won last year’s Chevron, opened with a shocking 7-under 77. Lydia Ko shot 1-over 73 with birdies on two of the last three holes. Ko came into the week battling injury after she woke up Sunday morning with neck spasms.

Friday’s forecast calls for a similar day, with isolated showers and storm potential after 2 p.m. local time. The weekend looks clearer in terms of thunderstorms but winds are expected to pick up, with gusts up to 20 mph.
