NASCAR’s return to Rockingham Speedway last weekend was a huge success. Not only did fans sell out the over 25,000-seat venue, viewers at home were equally excited for the race.

According to Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal, Saturday’s Xfinity Series race drew 1.053 million viewers, the second best viewership for an Xfinity race at Rockingham ever.

All ten Xfinity Series races this year have topped 1 million viewers, marking a milestone for the series and signaling the success of The CW’s broadcast.

With NASCAR’s triumphant return to The Rock, many have called for the Cup Series to return to the track in the near future. The last Cup Series race at the speedway was in 2004.

According to Bob Sargent, president and CEO of Track Enterprises, a return to the Rock is “on the radar.”

Sargent spoke with The Charlotte Observer after the race and was asked about the likelihood of Rockingham returning to the Cup schedule.

“Yes, absolutely, with the caveat that NASCAR is a big, worldwide entity, and when you look at dates, there are only so many,” he said. “There are only so many geographic regions and things like that. So there are many factors that go into when dates get put where. So it’s not a magic wand. “But I feel comfortable, and am not saying anything out of line that, yes, we did everything we needed to do.

“It’s a process. But we are on the radar. We are in that process.”

While it remains to be seen if and when we’ll see Cup racing return to the Rock, there’s no doubt that NASCAR’s return last weekend was special.
