It’s time for some team golf. The lone two-man team event on the PGA Tour returns this week with the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the field features the newest member of the career grand slam gang, Rory McIlroy. He’ll be teamed with good buddy Shane Lowry as the duo looks to repeat as champions.
There are 160 players in the field, with 80 two-mean teams set to battle it out. This is the eighth year that the event is a team competition. After 36 holes, the cut will be made to the low 33 teams plus ties.
How does the format work at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans?
Two formats will be used this week, with fourballs, also known as best ball, for the first and third rounds. The second and final rounds will use foursomes, also known as alternate shot.
What is the playoff format for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans?
If there’s a tie after 72 holes, there will be a sudden-death playoff on the first hole played as foursomes. If a second playoff hole is needed, that will be fourballs. The format will alternate from there for each playoff hole needed. McIlroy and Lowry needed a playoff to win in 2024.
