It didn’t take long for March Madness to deliver an upset, as No. 12 seed McNeese toppled No. 5 seed Clemson 69-67 on Thursday afternoon as first-round NCAA Tournament action began heating up. The Cowboys built a 24-point lead early in the second half and held off a late Clemson rally on to set up a showdown with No. 4 seed Purdue in the second round on Saturday.
The No. 4 seed Boilermakers were among the contingent of well-seeded teams that took care of business early as they outlasted No. 13 seed High Point 75-63. Both No. 1 seeds Thursday held serve as both Houston and Auburn cruised to relatively comfortable wins.
In late action, No. 7 seed Kansas’ disappointing season came to a fitting end with a 79-72 loss to No. 10 seed Arkansas. No. 5 seed Michigan survived a major scare from No. 12 seed UC-San Diego with a 68-65 win.
