The NFL’s “legal tampering” period begins on Monday at noon, and it sounds like the Jets already have a few free agent targets in their sights.

According to SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes, “two names to keep an eye on” for Gang Green are safeties Jevon Holland and Justin Simmons.

“Especially Holland,” Hughes posted.

A 25-year-old safety and second-round pick out of Oregon in 2021, Holland has plenty of familiarity with the Jets, as he’s seen them as an opponent twice a year for the last four years as a member of the Miami Dolphins.

Holland has five career interceptions, but none more notable than the “Fail Mary,” when he intercepted Tim Boyle and ran it back for a 99-yard touchdown in a 34-13 win over the Jets on Black Friday in 2023.

Simmons, also a safety, would be a more veteran option for the Jets, as he turns 32 in November. Simmons played his first eight seasons in Denver, earning four Second-Team All-Pro selections to go along with two Pro Bowls.

The “legal tampering” period is the unofficial start of NFL free agency, as clubs can begin negotiating with free agents. While contracts can not officially be signed until the new league year starts on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., clubs and players can agree to terms on a new deal during this window.

Safety will be a position to watch for the Jets this offseason, as the top three safeties on their 2024 depth chart – Tony Adams (restricted), Chuck Clark, and Ashtyn Davis – are all free agents.
