The start of the 2025-26 season is just under a month away, but the Philadelphia 76ers are already dealing with some bad luck.
Second-year guard Jared McCain suffered a UCL tear in his right thumb during a workout and will undergo surgery on the injury, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. He will be sidelined four-to-six weeks, Charania added.
The 76ers announced McCain’s injury on Thursday, noting they were consulting with specialists to determine next steps:
McCain is coming off an injury-shortened rookie season that was one of the many setbacks for Philadelphia during its disappointing 24-58 campaign. Along with his injury, the Sixers dealt with the prolonged absences of stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George.
Before getting injured, McCain showed immense promise and appeared to be the early frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. The 2024 No. 16 pick appeared in 23 games with eight starts and averaged 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month in November, which included a 34-point, 10-assist performance in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Unfortunately, things came crashing down for McCain when he suffered a meniscus tear in his left knee that forced him to miss the rest of the season.
The 21-year-old would have played a big role in helping the Sixers compete for a playoff spot in the East this year, but it seems like he will be sidelined after Thursday’s setback.
